According to the Hong Kong Report, Bitcoin has once again made Hong Kong investors “worse”: a bitcoin payment platform in Hong Kong has closed suddenly in recent days, and it is estimated that nearly 3,000 bitcoins may be lost at any moment.
When a group of Hong Kong Bitcoin investors visited the offices of the relevant trading platform, they discovered that they had gone empty, suspected of fraud and high-pressure marketing, and estimated that the sum of the losses incurred by the “principal owners” would be as high as HK$3 billion at any given time.
Bitcoin, which has been invented in 2009 by Internet players who claim to be middle-aged, has been well received by global Internet players, with transactions growing from 50 million to 80 million last year, equivalent to $15 billion to $23 billion (approximately $180 billion), and has so far invested up to $430 million. But Bitcoin, for lack of real asset value, fell sharply last year, and at one point was described as the worst investment commodity.
Bitcoin prices fell by 32.06% at the beginning of last month, the lowest level since October 2013. Although some of the players left for a short period of time, believing that they would not continue to invest unless the virtual currency was better regulated, its volatility was still favoured by speculators, and many were blindly pursued as profitable, thereby compromising the wife’s life.
The Hong Kong Police indicated that, as of 7 last night, the Cybersecurity and Science and Technology Crimes Investigation Section had not received any information on the Bitcoin case, but would keep an eye on developments.
30 persons seeking help in the amount of HK$ million per person
Members of the Legislative Council, Leung Yoo-chung, have recently received assistance from nearly 30 victims of Bitcoin, who are suspected of having been defrauded by a bitcoin trading and storage platform, and who are involved in an average of over HK$ 1 million, or even in the loss of over HK$ 10 million.
He cited one of the victims who had been promoted by friends in September last year to open an account and invest approximately HK$ 1.3 million in a platform that reported being traded by Bitcoin investors. But the owner found the platform’s price at the end of last year, which fell far behind the market, was unable to sell and trade, and the office suspected that it would no longer operate and would simply feel deluded.
Liang Yung continued that the platform initially allowed buyers to buy their own bitcoins, except for a sudden change in the rules of the purchase and sale game last month, where free trade was prohibited unless the buyer invested in extra-valued investments, and the platform ceased to operate after the price had stagnated significantly behind the market.
He states that it is estimated that 3,000 people have fallen into the marketing trap with losses of up to HK$3 billion at any one time. When visiting the platform's office earlier, it was discovered that the office had been empty and that the person in charge was not in a position to contact him, so that an urgent press conference would be held today to explain the incident and to turn to the police collectively if it was suspected that the incident involved fraud and high-pressure marketing.
According to the information received, the Cybersecurity and Science and Technology Crimes Investigation Unit, established by the Hong Kong Police early this year, had not, as of 19 last night, received a report from the public on Bitcoin, and the police will keep an eye on developments.
