According to the British media on 1 March, MtGox, the world's largest Bitcoin trading platform, officially filed an application for insolvency protection in Tokyo last Friday (28).
According to the information received, on 28 November, several lawyers representing MtGox had filed an application for insolvency protection with the local regulatory body in Tokyo, while just a few days earlier MtGox had announced that it would temporarily close off online transactions, and the head of the company had once declared to the outside world that they were “working to find a solution to the current problems”.
It has also been reported by Agence France Presse that, while detailed information on MtGox's bankruptcy is still unknown, it has been reported that MtGox's bankruptcy application has now been processed by a local court in Tokyo, Japan, and that MtGox declared at the court hearing that the company had been “indebted” and that the total outstanding debt amounted to JPY 6.5 billion.
According to the British media, MtGox’s lawyer decided to take action to apply for bankruptcy protection only after the United States regulators had announced the summons. Previously, some 744,000 bitcoins traded through the platform had been stolen because of a security gap in MtGox, with an estimated loss of $350 million, and after the theft, MtGox had to close all online transactions in order to avoid an expansion of the situation.
Since then, MtGox has been under considerable pressure because buyers are eager to raise their own bitcoin. It is known that a bitcoin transaction price was still as high as $561 as of the time of publication.
In addition, in response to a number of recent developments, Japan's Under-Secretary of State for Finance also stated last week that the regulation of Bitcoin required cooperation between States in order to avoid loopholes being exploited.
